Voluminous white sheer curtains tied back beside a tall sunlit window

Handmade in India since 1974

Furniture, Considered

Pieces built slowly, from solid hardwood and full-grain leather, for rooms that are meant to be lived in rather than looked at.

Collections

Six rooms, one way of making things

Living, bedroom, home theatre, carpets, window treatments and floors — drawn and finished so a curtain still sits comfortably beside a sofa bought four years earlier.

Wallpaper rolls standing together, showing damask, floral and linen textures

Craftsmanship

Ninety-two steps, one bench, one maker

A Royal sofa is built by a single craftsperson from frame to final stitch. Nothing moves down a line. The person who ties the springs is the person who fits the leather, and their mark goes on the underside of the frame when it is finished.

Frames are kiln-dried hardwood, jointed and dowelled rather than stapled. Seats are eight-way hand-tied where the design calls for it. We still use horsehair and cotton felt over foam because it settles instead of collapsing.

It takes between six and eleven weeks. We have tried to make it faster and the furniture was worse for it.

Materials

Paper, timber, hide — chosen before the drawing

Wallpaper comes in damask, floral and linen weaves we paste to the wall, not the paper. Flooring is light oak herringbone, finished in hard-wax oil so a scratch can be spot-repaired at home.

Leather still comes from four tanneries we have used for over a decade, finished aniline so the grain stays visible. Timber is FSC-certified oak, ash and walnut.

Fabrics are Belgian linen, wool boucle and cotton velvet, all rated above 40,000 Martindale rubs. Order swatches and live with them for a week before you commit.

What our customers say

We waited eleven weeks for the Belgravia and I would wait again. It arrived wrapped like something borrowed from a museum, and the colour is exactly what was on the swatch.
